TSP & FERS Retirement Planning in Phoenix

If you serve near Luke Air Force Base or work for the federal government, your retirement has more moving parts than most people realize. Your FERS pension, your Thrift Savings Plan, and Social Security all work together. One wrong choice can cost you for the rest of your life. We help federal and military families across Phoenix make these choices with clear, plain-English advice.

Capital Choice Arizona is veteran-owned. A Navy veteran on our team knows TSP, FERS, and military benefits firsthand. You get straight answers, not a sales pitch. We are also a Dave Ramsey SmartVestor Pro practice.

Your FERS Pension is Smaller Than You Think

The FERS formula pays 1% of your high-3 salary for each year of service. If you retire at 62 or later with at least 20 years, that rises to 1.1%. Even after 30 years of work, your pension often replaces only about a third of your pay. Your TSP and Social Security have to fill the rest. If you retire before 62 with enough service, the FERS Special Retirement Supplement can bridge part of that gap until Social Security starts. Your survivor benefit election is also permanent. Once you choose it, you cannot undo it later. We walk through the trade-offs with you before you sign anything.

Getting Your TSP Right

The TSP has some of the lowest fees you can find. That is a real advantage worth protecting. But the default setup is not right for everyone. Always contribute enough to get the full 5% match. That match is free money you cannot claim later. The G Fund feels safe, but holding too much of it for years can fall behind inflation. In 2026 you can add $24,500 of your own pay. If you are 50 or older you can add $8,000 more. If you are between 60 and 63, you can add $11,250 instead. We review your fund mix against your age, your comfort with risk, and your target retirement date.

Should You Move Your TSP When You Retire?

This is the question we hear most, and most advisors only answer it one way. Rolling your TSP into an IRA is not always the right move. The TSP’s low fees are hard to beat, and some IRA products cost more. Sometimes a rollover does make sense, for more choices or simpler withdrawals. We can manage your TSP while it stays right where it is, with no rollover required. You keep the low fees. We handle the day-to-day rebalancing. We help you weigh the trade-offs instead of pushing one answer.
